This project involves crafting a short story and a 20-page artist's book inspired by our exploration of a chosen neighborhood using resources from the school library and archive. In the seminar, we select an object or moment from the neighborhood to create a backstory, while in the studio, we produce an artist's book that complements our narratives.
I focused on Manhattan's Lower East Side, crafting 'The Stone Family' inspired by retired fishermen in government homes at John V. Lindsay East River Park. The story is a dark fairy tale emphasizing honesty, respect for nature, and exposing human vices. I take pride in the creative plot and risk-taking narrative.
My artist's book has two parts: paintings of visual elements in my story (fish, waves, houses) in a black and white box, and an accordion book depicting stone collages representing various family structures and relationships.
