GRASS WATERFALL

The installation narrates the mysterious relation between women and nature. Its main component is a fluffy green carpet, covered by burnt wool felt with the decoration of wool made by crochet and weaving techniques. The burning of wool felt was inspired by Mira Lehr, an eco-feminist artist who uses burning to show the cycle of nature. The burning shows unpredictability and freedom. After a few burning experiments, one of the burning holes surprisingly looked like a uterus. The unexpected outcome inspired me to show women’s menstruation. In Chinese occult culture, women’s menstruation is linked to the Moon and water. Therefore, I decorated the hole with blue yarn and crochet chains to represent the waterfall. The green fabric resembles the grassland nourished by water. To me, the crochet and weaving techniques symbolize the motherhood of women and their traditional role in the family. The whole piece represents a natural eco-cycle and a metaphor of women as Mother Nature.
